Data Update 2

 Lead

Vancouver's rate of New Building development has plummeted by nearly 90% since 2017, according to City of Vancouver data.

Excel Workbook Link and Explanation

The workbook includes the original raw data along with the slice that highlights the drastic decrease in issued building permits for New Buildings.

As mentioned previously in Data Update 1, the original dataset contains information on Building Permit Issuances in the City of Vancouver from 2017 to 2024.  I've primarily analyzed the Type of Work column which broadly categorizes the permits into six classifications: Addition/Alteration; Demolition/Deconstruction; New Building; Outdoor Uses (No Buildings Proposed); Salvage and Abatement; and Temporary Building/Structure.

The slice essentially features a pivot table that sums the number of projects within each permit category/"Type of Work" category from the years 2017 to 2024.  Next to the pivot table, I've included the percentage change calculations for each type of work. While all categories illustrate a decline in permit issuances, with some showing even greater declines than that of New Buildings, I chose to focus on the New Building category as I believe its relevance will resonate more strongly with a broader audience.

  1. Hi Madi! I really enjoyed reading through your dataset; it is very informative and detailed. The only thing that I would suggest would be adding why that 90% number is important and its relevance to the plummeted building developments.

  2. Hi Madi, great job on your analysis. You have a succinct yet intirguing lead sentence, complimented by your good find in the data, 90% is quite mind-boggling. I noticed in your data slice that you have two ending columns, one for the values you found as a decimal and the other as a percentage. I couldn't see any other difference between the two, so just a reminder that you can switch the decimals to percentages without having to copy them, just to cut down on a column. Other than that, great job!

  3. Hi Madi! Great work on the dataset update and slice. Your lead is clear and backed by your data splice. The 90% drop is fascinating and it would be interesting to see what factors have impacted the permit rate although I know that’s outside the scope of the assignment. Keep it up!
